Seattle Natives Open Auto Repair Shop in Midwest

Seattle transplants Matt and Debra Boily are settling into life in the Midwest as they open their first Mr. Transmission/Milex Complete Auto Care store in Columbus, Ohio.

In addition to their new location, the pair signed a franchise agreement with Moran Family of Brands to add two additional units in the area in 2022 and 2024.

Matt Boily spent the first 10 years of his career as an auto mechanic before joining Cessna Aircraft Company. During his more than 18-year tenure at Cessna, Boily held numerous roles in executive management. He also served for nearly five years as director of operations at Aerospace AMT, where he ran a $165 million revenue company. The couple, who made the move to the Midwest to be closer to their family, is committed to establishing a successful business in the Columbus, Ohio, area while creating a family-friendly atmosphere at their locations.

“Columbus is a market we have targeted for some time, and we are thrilled to expand our franchise footprint to central Ohio,” said Peter Baldine, President of Moran Family of Brands. “Matt and Debra Boily possess many of the qualities we seek in our franchise owners. They are a family operation committed to providing honest service for their customers. We anticipate the Milex/Mr. Transmission stores coming to Columbus will each be very successful.”

Franchising Puts Boily in Driver’s Seat

After spending his entire career answering to a chief executive or board of directors, Boily was ready to tackle entrepreneurship and be his own boss. He opted to delve into franchising because it offers training, support, and brand recognition.

“I’ve always had an interest in working on cars, and when we made the decision to move closer to family in the Midwest, we decided to open our own car repair franchise,” Boily said. “Moran shares my values. They offer tremendous support, are involved in our store on a daily basis, and are making sure we get off to a good start. Plus, they have a strong brand.”

Boily is taking advantage of being an entrepreneur with the added benefit of a franchise community. Moran Family of Brands, the nation’s leading franchise of aftermarket auto repair brands, offers a superior franchise support network. Boily can contact fellow franchisees to collaborate about business ownership, or with questions on vehicle repairs. Being a franchisee also gives Boily access to Moran Family of Brand’s nationwide warranty. If someone gets their car fixed in Chicago and travels to Columbus, they can bring it into the shop and they will take care of their warranty item for them.

“We are family-oriented and want to do the right thing to take care of the customer. We will be open and honest with our customers. We won’t recommend services they don’t need. We’ll also help them prioritize the repairs to meet their needs and budget,” Boily added.

Opening Doors of Essential Business

The outbreak of COVID-19 last spring slowed down plans to open their first location. They delayed opening their unit by several months, which allowed them to hit the ground running when they opened their essential business in September. Their 7,300 square foot location has 10 car bays. Debra Boily ensures their unit is operating safely and following social distancing guidelines and cleaning procedures. She also oversees the chain’s accounting and training processes. Matt Boily runs front-office operations and works hard to build recognition in the community and grow their business.

While the pandemic has provided challenges to every small business owner, Boily is proud of their success and the key role they play in the community as an essential business. One of their accounts is Freedom Home and Day Health Care, which relies on transportation buses to shuttle its elderly daycare members. Boily’s team has serviced six of the eldercare provider’s vehicles over the last two months and do all their oil changes and general repair, offering them priority service at a discounted price. “People are taking safety precautions during the pandemic. As an essential business, we keep our employees and customers safe and keep people on the road,” Boily said.
