Summertime Rules of the Road

As you stock up on sunscreen and prep for fun in the sun, Milex Complete Auto Care has a handy list of road trip tips to follow to stay safe this summer. And we’re here to make sure your car is ready for high temperatures.

Road Trip Tips

Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer season as schools let out for summer and workloads lighten. At least 44% of people plan to travel more than once this summer, and 79% are gearing up to take a road trip, according to a survey conducted by The Vacationer, a vacation resource.

Road trips can be an exciting and memorable experience, but they can quickly become a nightmare if you aren’t prepared. Whether you're planning a short weekend getaway or a cross-country adventure, you should do a few things to prepare for the trip and travel safely.

  1. Check your vehicle. Before hitting the road, it's important to check your vehicle. Ensure your car is in good condition and has undergone recent maintenance, such as an oil change and tire rotation. Milex recommends having a professional check the fluid levels, brakes, battery, lights, and tire pressure to improve gas mileage and stay safe. Make sure to use high-quality antifreeze and check the water pump. If any of your belts and hoses look dry or cracked, they need to be replaced.
  2. Plan your route. Decide where you want to go and how you want to get there. Use a map or GPS to determine the best route and estimate the travel time. Consider the distance, traffic, and weather conditions. Plan regular breaks to rest, stretch your legs, and refuel.
  3. Pack smart. Pack only what you need and avoid overpacking. Make a checklist of essential items such as snacks, water, a first aid kit, a phone charger, and entertainment. If you're traveling with kids, pack games, books, and other activities to keep them occupied.
  4. Rest up. Driving while fatigued is dangerous and can lead to accidents. Get enough rest before your trip, and plan to take breaks along the way. Share driving duties with a passenger, if possible. Avoid driving late at night or in the early morning when your body is naturally tired.
  5. Follow the traffic guidelines. Familiarize yourself with the rules of the road in the states or countries you'll be traveling through. This includes speed limits, traffic signs, and driving laws. If you're traveling abroad, make sure you have the necessary documents, such as an international driver's license and car insurance.
  6. Stay connected. Share your itinerary with family or friends and carry a mobile phone and a GPS device in case of emergencies. Keep a list of emergency contacts and phone numbers in case of a breakdown or other unexpected situations.

Prepare for Hot Weather

Even if you aren’t road-tripping, sweltering summer temperatures can do a number on your car. The summer of 2022 ranked as the third hottest in the last 128 years, and meteorologists predict this summer will be another scorcher.

Being prepared is the best defense against the stifling summer heat. Make sure to park your car in a garage or use a sunshade to keep the interior cooler. Consider adding a clear coat of wax to the exterior of your vehicle to prevent fading. Keep your car’s emergency kit stocked. Store some snacks and bottled water in your vehicle and stay up to date on maintenance to maximize your summertime experience.
