Transmission Components

A standard transmission rebuild typically consists of the following components and procedures:

  • Transmission Gaskets and Seals are replaced to prevent fluid leaks both internal and external. These soft parts harden and deteriorate over time and are essential for maintaining proper fluid pressure and cleanliness inside the transmission.
  • Friction Clutches and Steels are the heart of an automatic transmission. Friction material on the clutches wears down with use, so new friction plates and steel plates are installed to ensure smooth gear changes.
  • Bands have friction material to help hold gears or allow them to spin freely. Over time, they can stretch or wear out, so they are replaced or adjusted during a rebuild.
  • O-Rings and pistons are critical for sealing hydraulic circuits. All O-rings are replaced to maintain fluid pressure and prevent leaks.
  • Bushings provide support and reduce friction for rotating parts. Worn bushings can cause excessive movement and noise; thus, they are replaced to restore proper alignment and operation.
  • Bearings and Races support shafts and reduce friction. Replacing worn bearings ensures smooth and quiet operation.
  • Springs are found in various transmission assemblies, such as the valve body, accumulators and servos and are replaced as needed to maintain proper tension and shifting performance.
  • Valve Body is the brain of the modern automatic transmission. It directs hydraulic fluid to allow for up and down shifting. In most cases, the valve body is cleaned, inspected, and updated.
  • Torque Converter is the connection between the engine to the transmission and multiplies torque. A rebuilt or new torque converter is part of a full rebuild.
  • Pump Assembly circulates transmission fluid under pressure. The pump is inspected for scoring or wear and replaced or rebuilt as necessary.
  • Planetary Gear Sets create different gear ratios. Worn or damaged planetaries are replaced to restore shifting performance.
  • Drums contain the friction clutches and interact with the bands. They are checked for cracks or scoring and replaced as needed.
  • Servos apply pressure to the bands for gear changes. Servos are checked for function and sealed properly with new O-rings or updated with bonded parts.
  • Solenoids direct and control fluid flow which allows for the shifting of gears. Faulty solenoids or the solenoid pack are replaced during a rebuild.
  • Internal Filter protects delicate internal parts of the transmission from entrained contaminants and ensures efficient fluid flow
  • Hard Parts are internal parts that are inspected for excessive wear or damage and are replaced as needed. These might include gear sets, sprags, drums, shafts, cases, or any major internal component.
  • Fasteners and Retainers include critical bolts, clips, snap rings, and retainers may be changed if they are worn or have lost integrity/stretched.
